Letter from the Rush Chairman

Dear Potential Rushee,

Congratulations on your acceptance to UCLA! The few days before school starts will prove to be both exciting and a bit intimidating, as you will be making decisions that will lay the foundation for your college experience and the rest of your life. One of those decisions will be whether or not to pledge a fraternity. Should you choose to do so, your next challenge will be to decide which one best suits your goals and interests.

The Brothers of Sigma Chi would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to UCLA, encourage you to explore the Greek system, and invite you to rush Sigma Chi. We have set ourselves above every other house on the row because of our commitment to academics, athletics, social life, philanthropy, and brotherhood. As an organization, we are committed to excellence in all these areas of college life, and for that reason, Sigma Chi offers opportunities that no other fraternity can. We firmly believe that the experiences you undergo as a Sigma Chi will make you a better and stronger person.

We know that Rush Week can be difficult. Choosing which fraternity to pledge is a big decision and you do not have very much time to make it. So, let us encourage you to ask around, attend different rush events, and then give Sigma Chi a chance to make your decision easy.

We invite you to join us throughout Rush Week. Enclosed is a schedule of our events and activities for that pivotal week and a half. You will have many opportunities at UCLA. Take advantage of this one, because not only will you insure having a complete experience, you will also forge the life long friendships that make college great.

Sigma Chi's beach front estate is located at the top of Gayley Avenue, across the street from the De Neve dorm. Feel free to give me a call at (650) 430-2672 should you have any questions. We hope to see you during Rush week.

Best Regards,
Ryan Chapin
Sigma Chi Rush Chairman

Why Rush? I'm not the Frat type.

Many students confuse fraternity life with the chicks-and-beer college party stereotype impressed upon us by pop culture. Sure, you can attend a few frat parties without being in a fraternity. But you would still be missing out on what fraternity life is truly about. While both chicks and beer are inherent parts of the college lifestyle for most male students, fraternity life encompasses and then goes beyond the fun and games that can be had at college.

At its core, Sigma Chi is an organization that thrives on providing young men with high-quality college experiences, ranging across such aspects as education, recreation, spiritual fulfillment, and community service. These experiences translate both into preparation for the world that lies beyond campus and into memories to keep long after graduation. Sigma Chi strongly values the ideals of true friendship, justice, scholarship, and gentlemanly conduct. It is said that college is the best four years of your life. Brotherhood in Sigma Chi guarantees this be so. If you are drawn to these ideas and values, then maybe you want to give Sigma Chi a shot.

And what is Rush Week?

Sigma Chi has two Rush Weeks per year: one which comprises the first week of Fall Quarter and one for the first week of Spring. Rush Week is a week packed with daily events and activities, designed to introduce you to the Brothers and the House. We encourage you to stop by the House and meet us whenever you like, though Rush Week is the only time in which we invite students to join us. This invitation process is known as giving a student a "Bid". Rush Week is the best time to decide if you would truly like to join Sigma Chi. Ask yourself: Do you like the people you meet? Do you like what you hear about the House? Feel free to ask plenty of questions. We want to get to know you, and we want you to get to know us. We welcome you to come back as often as you like, hang out, and get to know us, to help you decide if Sigma Chi is right for you.
